The Importance of Nutrition During Exercise

Having adequate nutrition in your body is important and goes hand in hand with getting the best benefits of exercising. A lot of calories are burned up during exercises because your metabolism (catabolism) rate is increased. This means that energy levels are decreased and therefore proper nutrition must replace them immediately.

An increase in the breakdown of fats and carbohydrates happen whenever you exercise. Replacing them is a must, and in cases where the focus is muscle building, amino acid sources are required to allow the exercise to trigger off the new rate of building muscles.

It’s a fact that the body’s demands increases a lot, so you’re going to need carbohydrates to give you adequate amount of energy so that the level of metabolism will keep on going. Food that are rich in protein are great suppliers of amino acids which are important in muscle building. Extra quantities of minerals like magnesium and calcium, antioxidants like Vitamins C and E, and micronutrients like vitamins B and chromium, are also needed. Free radicals are released even more by the level of metabolism, so anti-oxidants would need mop up action.

Drinking more water than you would usually do is one tactic you need to do. You lose a lot of fluids when you exercise due to increased respiration and sweating, and you are in danger of being dehydrated. Renal stone formation and heat stroke are just a few examples of what dehydration can do to you. To cool off the exothermic reaction that takes place in your body, you need to drink plenty of liquids, especially water.

Increasing virtually are chemical reactions in the body. The heart muscles, just like everything else, is working overtime. In order for the electrical activities in the heart to keep up with the new demands, you need to supply it with oxygen, nutrients, and vitamins C and B. Influx and outflux of potassium ions and sodium occurs and therefore it is vital to have adequate nutritional intake. You risk heart block if these ions ever depletes.

The main energy source are carbohydrates, so make sure you get enough before or after you exercise. If you’re going to take it before you exercise, give it time to digest to prevent Angina because the flow of blood is more to the abdominal organs, thereby depriving the heart. It’s important to pay attention to the body’s needs and eat after a good rest.
