What is homeschooling?

In homeschooling, the child obviously is educated at home; this can be attributed to many factors such as the physical condition of the child, or the parent may simply prefer it over regular schooling. The most notable aspect of homeschooling is that the parent assumes obligation over the education of the child and this practice is considered acceptable.

Does the state recognize and accept homeschooling?

All states recognize homeschooling, it is however subject to compliance with state imposed guidelines. Some states require prior notification to the superintendent of any intent to homeschool the child. There are states where no prior notification from the parent is required, while some states have stricter rules and stringent requirements than other states.

It is deemed that homeschooling has achieved its purpose if the child exhibits an increased awareness and appreciation of things around him.

What about College?

The main disadvantage of homeschooling is its lack of a diploma, since the child isn’t taught in a public school, the state cannot issue a diploma; however, some states allow parents to “make” their own diplomas to be given to the child on the day of “graduation”. Many colleges and universities will not require state issued diplomas and accept, nay, encourage homeschooling “graduates” into their programs, so parents should have no qualms homeschooling their children if that is their desire.
