A Look At The Roots Of Farming

Those who want to explore this country’s roots may want to visit a group of destinations that showcase the role of agriculture-yesterday, today and tomorrow.

JohnDeere, a blacksmith from Vermont in 1836, set up a shop in Grand Detour, Ill., a small Rock River Town. He forged a special kind of plow in 1837 because he was convinced that this is what the sticky Midwestern soil needed. His “self-polishing” plow grew in popularity and, as it did, so did the company that bears his name.

Today, visitors to the JohnDeere Historic Site can watch a blacksmith at work in a replica of the blacksmith’s shop where Deere fashioned his historic plow. This site also shows an archeological exhibit that shows the site of JohnDeere’s original blacksmith shop, a gift shop, and don’t forget the home that JohnDeere built.

In Moline, Ill., is where the JohnDeere Pavilion is located and it’s considered one of the top five tourist attractions in the state which has welcomed guests from dozens of countries and all 50 states. A vintage and modern-day equipment is what it offers and an interactive exhibits that are devoted to the development of the company and agriculture around the world.

A child’s question about where food comes from is what one exhibit will answer while a 40-inch touch-screen display will show visitors a vision of the future of agriculture as well as the challenges that come with feeding the global population of tomorrow. Saluting the dedicated work of farm families worldwide is a feature film called “Anthem: A Song of the Land.”

Offering hundreds of unique, officially licensed John Deere products is the adjacent and one-of-the-kind retail shop called John Deere Store.

The John Deere Collectors Center in Moline is also known as the primary resource for collectors and enthusiasts who are interested in the heritage and history of the company and the collection of John Deere memorabilia, equipment, and tractors.

It includes a living history exhibit that replicates a 1950s era dealership, complete with a customer service department to answer questions about parts and manuals for vintage equipment. Besides having an active tractor restoration area, the Center also hosts auctions and seminars.

Recently opening up the attractions to those looking for a unique location to hold a special event such as company meetings or a reception are these destinations that have instituted a facility rental program.

Other things the company offers include event planners and local caterers who work with groups to plan parties. The Deere family homes and Deere & Company’s World Headquarters are other sites that you can visit.
